| "Why he won't just use Cliffs Notes like everyone else is beyond me," says White's mother. |
Many are suggesting that Jeremy White's book report on A Separate Peace by John Knowles made the book seem much more interesting that it actually is and included approximately 220 words dealing with the supposed homo-erotic subtext of the book. Critics argue that White purposely exaggerated the book's quality and subtext to justify his admission into a summer literary camp hosted by the school.
"When A Separate Peace was included in the ninth grade curriculum it was to get the students thinking about some of the issues that affect every teen," said Oak Mills Principal, Larry Childress. "Jealousy, conscience, guilt, rebellion and conformity and these kinds of issues. I've never heard of a student or teacher discussing whether or not any of the characters at the all boys school was homosexual. This is just blatant sexing up of a report to garner multi-departmental support for a spot in the summer literary camp."
White defended his report as a simple extension of literary analysis at a press conference held on the front steps of the school today.
"I'll admit it's a shocking angle to take on a classic text, but I think we all know what can be concluded from the fact that the boys in the story spent all their time with other boys. We don't have specific reports of what was going on in there but it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together and figure out what those guys were up to with all their 'swimming.' I certainly didn't write this report just to get into the coolest literary camp this side of the Mississippi. I'd never do that."
Upon finishing his statement White was beaten mercilessly by three football players. Due to this Friday's big game no action was taken.
